Uttarakhand Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri
DEHRA DUN: Polling for the prestigious Dhumakot seat in the Uttarakhand Assembly will be held on August 29. The notification is expected on August 3, the Chief Electoral Officer, N. Ravi Shankar, told The Hindu here on Wednesday. The last date for filing nominations is August 10. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on August 11 and the last date for withdrawals is August 13. Counting of votes will take place on August 31, Mr. Ravi Shankar said, adding that the electoral code of conduct would be effective in Pauri district till September 3 when the poll process gets completed. The by-election assumes importance as Chief Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, who represents Pauri constituency in Parliament, will contest from here to become a member of the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha as required under the Constitution. The Congress, which lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition in Uttarakhand during the last elections, has all the reason to be peeved as the seat was vacated by former Congress strongman T. P. S. Rawat. Both the ex-Generals have been touring the constituency promising rapid all-round growth . Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Harish Rawat has urged the Election Commission to immediately send Central observers to Dhumakot “as the BJP has been violating all norms.”
