Goa Congress MLAs to face action

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: Faced with some anxious moments on Tuesday raising doubts over the stability of his 48-day-old Congress–led Government in the midst of the budget session, Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Wednesday decided to initiate action against some Congress MLAs hobnobbing with the Opposition.

Perturbed by the moves to destabilise his Ministry, the Chief Minister on Wednesday said vested interests, which were disturbed by his Government’s decision to scrap the controversial State Regional Plan 2011 and all the real estate and developmental activities related to that plan, were behind the present moves to shake his Government. What shocked him was that the Opposition Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which made “tall claims about principled politics ahead of elections was joining hands with such vested interests to destabilise him.” “The Congress is intact. The crisis is being precipitated by the BJP, which was being exposed for joining hands with same people whom they attacked for promoting the controversial regional plan 2011 ahead of Assembly polls,” said Mr. Kamat. Denying the party’s role in the on-going crisis faced by the Government, Manohar Parrikar of the BJP said the Government would crumble under its own weight. The Congress-led coalition had to face anxious moments when Victoria Fernandes, the only woman MLA, remained absent during the voting for budgetary demands in the Assembly defying a party whip.
