Setting a new precedent

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Setting a new precedent, President Pratibha Patil read out her inaugural address in both, English and Hindi, after taking the oath of office in the Central Hall of Parliament House on Wednesday. In the past, a translation of the President’s address was read out by the Vice-President.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee were among the first to call on Ms. Patil after she occupied her office.

Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar was also an early caller.
