NEW DELHI: Veteran trainer, Gurdev Singh, passed away after a cardiac arrest here on Tuesday. He was 77-years-old and is survived by six children. Gurdev, who began his career as a jockey, used to show his prowess in the gymkhana races in Lahore (before partition), Delhi, Meerut and Lucknow. He became a saddler in early 1970. With more than 900 winners to his credit, he achieved a landmark of sending out 11 North India Derby winners (mainly for Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy). He saddled his last Derby winner — Celtic Princess — in January. The 1000 and 2000 Gunieas were also at his mercy on more than five occasions. He used to train the horses by sitting on the wheel chair during the fag end of his life as he was unable to walk freely after developing leg problems few years ago.
