Rs. 88.75 lakh for construction of heritage centre

Rs. 95.3 lakh for development of trekking camp


BANGALORE: The State Government has prepared a Rs. 6.33-crore action plan to promote tourism and effect development in Kodagu district in the current financial year.

Replying on behalf of Tourism Minister B. Sriramulu, Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya told the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that Rs. 25 lakh had been earmarked for the development of Hattihole and Kotebetta regions so as to provide a hanging bridge, boating facility as well as concrete flooring. A sum of Rs. 88.75 lakh would be spent on the construction of a Kodava Heritage Centre at Madikeri. Suitable land had been identified for the purpose, he said. He was replying to a question of K.G. Bopaiah of the BJP.

A sum of Rs. 24 lakh had been set aside for the renovation of the Raja’s tomb at Madikeri, Rs. 95.3 lakh for the development of a trekking camp at Nagarahole, Rs. 2 crore for the development of places of tourist interest in and around Madikeri, Rs. 50 lakh for upgrading the road connecting Madikeri and Pushpagiri, and Rs. 1.5 crore for the upgrading the existing hotel Valley View at Madikeri and Baghamandala.

The Government had not released any funds for the implementation of tourism projects for the district in 2005-06. It had sanctioned Rs. 49.29 lakh during the last fiscal year, he said.

Speaking on various proposed projects, Dr. Acharya said that Rs. 7 lakh had been released towards completion of work on the Yatri Nivas which had been estimated to cost Rs. 70 lakh. A sum of Rs. 14.5 lakh had been released towards the eco-tourism project at Dubbare, the maintenance of which has been entrusted to a private firm under the Central scheme. On construction of toilets and drinking water facilities at Talakaveri, the Minister said Rs. 3.67 lakh would be spent.

Referring to development work in Somwarpet taluk, the Minister said Rs. 7.12 lakh would be released for purposes of establishment of sanitary as well as drinking water facilities at Pushpagiri. He also said that Rs. 15 lakh would be sanctioned for the execution of chalked out tourism plans at the district level.

Dr. Acharya said that the district administration had submitted various proposals on the development of tourism facilities. Proposals had been submitted for a sound and light show at the fort in Madikeri at a cost of Rs. 1.25 crore, including one for the development of rifle ranges at Madikeri, Abbi Falls and Yuvakapadi Palace as well as for connecting roads, he said.
