BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday accepted the arguments of the State and denied bail to a man accused of being involved in an acid attack on a practising advocate who was also a former president of the Sullia Bar Association. Advocate Venkappa Gowda and his wife, Champa, also an advocate, were injured on February 23, 2007, when they were splashed with acid when they were standing in front of their office in Beeramangala. Opposing the bail petition, State Public Prosecutor S. Dore Raju, submitted that B.K. Usman, a beedi manufacturer and contractor employing more than 1,000 people under him, had splashed acid on the two. The SPP said the motive for the acid attack appeared to be the popularity of Mr. Gowda among the residents of Sullia and the large number of cases that were coming to him. He said that Gowda had suffered acid burns on his left hand, arm, chest, cheek, left thigh and hand and that he was in hospital from February 23 to April 6. He contended that Usman had filed a bail plea before the Sullia Junior Magistrate First Class and this had been rejected. Justice H. Bilappa rejected the plea for bail.
