What’s the scene in Bangalore?

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: If one thinks that the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is efficient, it would be wrong. According to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, 37 per cent of water drawn for the city by the board goes down the drain daily.

Mr. Kumaraswamy told the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that on an average, 300 MLD of water is being wasted in the city. Replying to Basavaraj Rayaraddi (Congress) during question hour, he said the wastage was due to old and corroded water lines and illegal connections.

With the Japan Bank for International Corporation aid and funds from Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM), a Rs. 700 crore-plan has been prepared to replace old water pipes and household connections.

A special squad has been set up to check water leakage in the city. Steps would also be taken to fill vacancies in the BWSSB, the Chief Minister said.

Mr. Rayaraddi contested the figures given by Mr. Kumaraswamy.

He said that the Government was losing Rs. 637 crore annually due to water pilferage.
