16,551 acres acquired for industries

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has acquired 16,551.26 acres between April 1, 2002 and June 30, 2007 for the development of industries across the State, Minister for Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu has said.

Replying to M. Srinivas in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, Mr. Naidu said of the acquired land, 6,594.14 acres had been allotted to 75 industrial units. The process of taking possession of the rest of the land was on. These lands would be developed and allotted to industrial units soon after they were transferred to the KIADB, he added.

In answer to a supplementary, Mr. Naidu said the Government had evolved a new land acquisition policy accommodating the “sharing rights” of farmers. The policy had been ratified by the Cabinet, he added.

Explaining what prompted the new policy, he pointed out that to find an amicable solution to the stiff opposition being faced by the Government while acquiring lands from landowners or farmers, the Cabinet had decided to provide developed land instead of cash compensation.
