HYDERABAD: Baffled authorities of Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) ordered an enquiry, after they stumbled upon a student who sought admission into medicine / dental science courses under sports quota, claiming that he represented the State in the ‘Fourth Senior National Rugby Championship’ two years ago. Authorities were flummoxed over the claim as Rugby, a popular sport of the United States, is not played much in the State, leave alone having players participating in championships. According to the certificate the championship was conducted in Agra in October 2004. The student’s name was not released. The fake certificate came to light when the SAAP Vice-Chairman D. Murali Mohan went on a surprise visit to the verification centre at Prof G. Ram Reddy Centre of Distance Education on OU campus on Wednesday. Gives in writing
When questioned, the student himself gave it in writing that he had produced a ‘fake certificate’ issued by Rugby Federation of India. “We are trying to find out whether any such an association exists,” an official said. SAAP officials are contemplating stringent action against the student. Mr. Murali Mohan asserted that the SAAP would make a critical review of all the pending cases in this regard. “We are determined to bring to book all the guilty. Those who took the certificates but also those who issued them will be facing criminal action,” he said.
