SHRC seeks details of open spaces

HYDERABAD: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the HUDA and the GHMC authorities to submit details of open spaces and parks provided in different layouts in the city.

The commission issued this direction after taking a suo motu cognisance of a report published in The Hindu with “Where are the open spaces in Madhapur ?”

The Commission observed that the ecological balance was being disturbed due to encroachment of water bodies, open spaces meant for parks, and unauthorised felling of trees. “Prima facie, the Commission is of the view that proper attention is not being bestowed by the authorities concerned to protect environment,” the commission said in a press release. The Commission observed that degradation of environment was violation of human right. The city was spreading fast and now with GHMC, the area of Municipal Corporation had increased far and wide giving fillip to the structural activities. If caution was not exercised, the greater city of Hyderabad would remain a concrete jungle. Apart from water bodies, parks and open spaces were necessary to serve as lung spaces, it said. The Commission asked the HUDA Vice-Chairman and GHMC commissioner to submit details of layouts with provisions for open spaces, parks; encroachments of open spaces and their details, action taken by the authorities either to prevent encroachments or diversion of open spaces/parks, official permissions granted by authorities.
