Install street lights

There are about 1,200 residents in Mayuri Nagar township. Most of the residents are students and employees. These people go to Coimbatore, mostly on two-wheelers, in the morning and return to the township late in the night everyday. There are street lights up to Cowmara Madalayam in Chinnavedampatti. There is a burial ground north west of the Madalayam. There is no street light from the burial ground up to the Sankara College bus terminus and up to the main gate of Mayuri Nagar. Women who return home after work in the night are scared to walk in the dark on the isolated road from Chinnavedampatti ground to the Sankara College bus terminus and the Mayuri Nagar main gate because of anti-social elements. Authorities should make arrangements to instal street lights from the burial ground to the Mayuri Nagar main gate.

P. Kalaivani,

Chinnavedampatti.

Right step

This refers to the news item ‘Newspaper in Education (July 21). The Hindu programme is a right step in the right direction. Newspaper reading will surely improve students’ command of English and their vocabulary.

A. Ranganathan,

NGGO Colony.

Garbage disposal

Garbage disposal in the city has been discussed in your columns umpteen times. The Corporation has made sporadic efforts to improve the pathetic state of affairs. But nothing seems to change. We should shed our ‘not in my backyard’ attitude i.e. keeping our homes and premises clean by dumping waste over the boundary wall. There should be a sustained campaign to educate people on the need to keep the environs clean. Hotels, poultry and fish stalls, hospitals, industry, schools, homes etc. should be made accountable for waste collection. An efficient scheme for waste disposal is a prerequisite. Only if we are proactive can we solve this pernicious and perennial problem.

Air Commodore (Retd.) M. Vania,

Sowripalayam.
