Agony continues: People standing in a queue in front of the State Bank of India Main Branch in Tirupur to pay deposit for water connections on Wednesday

TIRUPUR: It was a long wait for the residents of unapproved layouts here to submit applications for piped water connections to households.

Many were waiting in front of State Bank of India Main Branch here since Tuesday evening to submit applications with deposit in the online counters on Wednesday. Tirupur Municipality has tied up with the SBI to receive the deposit in a transparent mode without giving any room to manoeuvring in seniority. The seniority number was allotted at the counter itself.

As many as 767 applicants turned up to pay deposit at the counter on the first day. The municipality had earlier announced that it would receive applications for five days from July 25. Subsequent to the Government Order that all the local bodies should provide water connections in seven days after submitting applications, the municipality announced that the public can pay the deposit at any time. Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj said the local body would speed up giving water connections to all areas. On the first day 231 applicants paid deposit amount to the tune of Rs.12.5lakh for water connections and the remaining were given tokens to pay the amount on subsequent days.

Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan pointed out that these applicants were predominantly from unapproved areas of the town. Under the newly- announced scheme, 17,000 house sites have been regularised so far in the town. The municipality has already laid a main pipe to give households piped water supply in unapproved areas at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore.
