‘Provide water connections within a week’

Staff Reporter

Stalin lifts restrictions on number of connections

TIRUPUR: In an effort to put an end to the ordeal of urban residents in getting piped drinking water connections to households, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered the municipalities and town panchayats across the State to provide water connections within a week from the submission of applications.

He also ordered lifting restrictions on the number of connections local bodies can provide.

If there are technical problems in extending water supply to a particular street or area, local bodies should rectify them quickly and provide water connections in a month.

So far, local bodies have not been receiving applications throughout the year despite a huge demand. The municipalities invite applications after getting nod from the Commissioner of Municipal Administration (CMA) or the Director of Town Panchayats (DTP) in case of town panchayats. The higher authorities restrict the number of connections.

These changes came into effect following the announcement by Mr. Stalin in the Assembly on simplifying the procedures in providing household water connections to all residents.

The Government Order states that the water supply schemes have been designed to provide water supply connections to all households of urban local bodies for the next 30 years. However, the number of connections was determined ‘artificially’ so far and restrictions were imposed in giving piped connections.

It further says that the revenue of the local body will improve if it extends more water connections and the sufferings of the people in getting drinking water will be mitigated to a large extent. And, the perception that the wealthy alone could get water connections should be changed, it states.

The CMA and the DTP were asked to send progress reports in providing water connections to the Government every month. Following the new directive, residents of unapproved layouts would benefit to a great extend, sources said.
