Rs. 50 lakh for each town panchayat

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: “All town panchayats in the State will get Rs. 50 lakh each to meet their requirements under the All Town Panchayats Anna Renaissance Scheme,” according to the director of town panchayats K. Gopal.

A total of 140 town panchayats have already been selected in the current financial year and the remaining 421 town panchayats will be covered in a phased manner in the coming four years, he said on Monday.

In Kancheepuram district, Uthiramerur, Karunguzhi, Kundrathur, Mangadu, Edaikazhinadu and Mamallapuram and in Tiruvallur district Arani, Podatturpet and Tirumazhisai town panchayats are already in the process of selecting the works according to their needs.

After launching a tax collection campaign through women self-help groups in Porur town panchayat, Mr. Gopal said more than 80 per cent of town panchayats had recorded 100 per cent tax collection during 2006-07. He hoped the campaign would help the town panchayats to collect the remaining amount of tax.

According to Mr. Gopal, more women SHGs would be entrusted with this job. He also launched a mass town beautification drive at Porur. Porur town panchayat president S. Arunachalam said the campaign would cover all 449 streets in the town panchayat area.

It included cleaning of stormwater drains, spraying of disinfectants, putting up of name and signboards and planting of saplings.

The town panchayat officials have been instructed to carry out checks on proper disposal of industrial wastes and biomedical wastes from hospitals.

They have also been asked to adhere to strict enforcement rules and urged to take suitable action against offenders.
