CUDDALORE: Backward Classes Welfare Minister M.R.K. Panneer Selvam opened the sluices of the Lower Coleroon Anicut on Wednesday to release water for irrigation. A total of 2,900 cusecs is being discharged through the Vadavar (2,000 cusecs), the North Rajan channel and the South Rajan channel (400 each) and the Kumikki Manniyar channel (100). The discharge at this rate would enable farmers in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts to raise samba crop on 1,32,320 acres (the Vadavar-11,852 acres, the Veeranam tank-49,440 acres, the Khan Sahib channel-9,993 acres, the North Rajan channel-29,835 acres, the South Rajan channel-26,089 acres and the Kumukki Manniyar-5,111 acres. Mr. Panneer Selvam said the water discharged from the Mettur dam on July 18 reached the Coleroon on July 20. As the level in the Lower Coleroon Anicut touched 8.6 feet on Wednesday, as against the maximum of 9 feet, water was being let out. Full storage in two days
The Minister said the Veeranam tank was fast filling up, and it would attain its full storage capacity in two days. When the level touched 47.5 feet (it stood at 40 feet on Wednesday), Metrowater would draw water for Chennai. However, the ayacutdars felt that the Government should have opened the Mettur dam in the second or third week of June when the catchments were getting copious rain. The delayed release from the dam would push the cultivation back, and when the crops matured, the northeast monsoon would set in, affecting grain formation or damaging the crops. They cited that the instance of 2004 when the unusual holding of water in the dam resulted in floods that damaged the crops in the tail-end delta region of the Kattumannakoil and Chidambaram taluks. I. Elangeeran of the Naraikkal Eri Paasana Vivasayigal Sangam said it was unfortunate that the authorities had ignored the well-established custom of inviting the farmers’ leaders for opening the Anicut. However, the officials said that since the function was organised at a short notice, they could not invite the representatives of the farmers’ associations.
