Withdrawn powers of local bodies will be restored: Stalin
Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI: The State Government will restore within two to three months the powers and privileges of local bodies that were withdrawn during the earlier regime, Minister for Local Administration M.K. Stalin assured on Wednesday.
Addressing a zonal conference of village panchayat presidents here, Mr. Stalin said he expected the two committees formed to analyse larger power delegation to local bodies to submit their reports by then. While one committee is involved in the study of the power structure in Corporations, Municipalities and Town Panchayats, the other is analysing the requirements in panchayats and panchayat unions.
After assuming power, the DMK Government could ensure that reservation for women in local bodies exceeded the 33 percent mark envisaged in the Panchyayat Raj introduced by late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, he said. During the course of the conference, panchayat presidents narrated their difficulties on power supply, road development, inadequate travel allowance, and encroachment of poromboke lands. Responding to their grievances, Mr. Stalin said that a survey of the road requirement was under way.
“Evict encroachments”
Advising the district administrations to furnish the details of poromboke land to village panchayats, he wanted the police and revenue departments to evict the encroachments and restore the land to the panchayats. Promising to enhance travelling allowance for the panchayat presidents shortly, he also announced that they would be provided with photo identity cards.
State Ministers K.N. Nehru, N. Selvaraj, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, K.R. Periyakaruppan and U. Mathivanan; Secretary of Rural Development Ashok Vardhan Shetty; Managing Director of TWAD Board Swaran Singh; and Director of Rural Development Gagandeep Singh Bedi, took part.
