Mettur dam sluice opens up on its own

METTUR: A sluice in the 16-vent surplus weir of the Mettur dam opened automatically on Tuesday night and unleashed a maximum of 18,000 cusecs into the Cauvery, forcing people on the banks to flee.

It happened at 10 p.m. at a time when the dam was full to its brim at 120 feet. Officials worked for nearly an hour and half to fix the snag in the motorised 53-tonne shutter before bringing it down.

The surplus sluices, which had been kept open since Sunday, were closed only at noon on Tuesday. An investigation pointed to an electric short circuit in the switch box in the control system of the shutters movement.
