WINNING FEELING: Sri Lankan cricketers are cock-a-hoop after their commanding series win over Bangladesh.
COLOMBO: Jehan Mubarak scored a career-best 72 and Sanath Jayasuriya grabbed four wickets on Wednesday to guide Sri Lanka to a 39-run win in the third and final limited-overs cricket international against Bangladesh, and a 3-0 series sweep. Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful won the toss and chose to field in a match curtailed to 40 overs each side because of a damp outfield caused by morning rain. His bowlers then dismissed Sri Lanka for a modest 196 runs. Efforts wasted
But the visiting batsmen wasted the bowlers’ efforts and were dismissed for 157 in 37.1 overs. Tamim Iqbal made a defiant 54 and shared 60 runs for the sixth wicket with debutant Mohammad Mahmudullah but Bangladesh could not capitalise on their efforts. Mahmudullah, in fact, had a memorable debut as he contributed 36 with the bat after taking two wickets in Sri Lanka’s inning. Bangladesh lost its first wicket without any score on the board when Javed Omar was caught by Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene off seam bowler Farveez Maharoof. And then with the total at 11, No. 3 batsman Mushfiqur Rahim was caught by wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara off Maharoof for a duck. Quick wickets
Ashraful and Iqbal then added 42 runs for the third wicket but seam bowler Nuwan Kulasekera trapped Ashraful lbw for 20. Two more wickets quickly followed and the visitors slumped to five down for 69. Jayasuriya ended the partnership between Iqbal and Mahmudullah in his first over just as it had started a Bangladesh comeback. Iqbal, whose running was curtailed because of injury, tried to hoist Jayasuriya and was caught by Chamara Kapugedera at deep-mid-wicket. Upul Chandana took a diving catch running from long-on to dismiss Mahmudullah and the next ball took a relatively easy catch to dismiss Abdur Razzak to give his side total control of the game. — AP SCOREBOARD Sri Lanka: S.
