Gowrishankar XI enters semifinals

HYDERABAD: Gowrishankar XI entered the semifinals of the Salar-e-Millat Challenge Cup prize money football tournament with a 2-0 win over Hyderabad Sporting XI at Quli Qutub Shah Stadium here on Wednesday.

Sridhar scored the first goal in the eighth minute. In the second half, Sugeeth positioned himself well to receive a long-range pass from right-half. He then slotted the ball home thereby completing the tally just before the final whistle.

In another quarterfinal, City College Old Boys recorded a 4-0 win over Gymkhana XI. Winger Azeem put CCOB ahead in the 12th minute off a cross from Naveed. Just before the break, Fareed struck to give CCOB a 2-0 lead. On resumption, CCOB slammed in two more goals through substitute Karrar and Fareed, who was later declared the ‘player of the match’.

Easy for CCOB

City College Old Boys scored a 41-20 win over Hyderabad Public School in the Hyderabad district annual basketball league championship at City College here.

The scores: CCOB 41 (Ramesh 12, Habeeb 10) bt HPS 20 (K. Karan 10).

SBI 55 (Harikrishna Prasad 24, Subbaiah 18) bt Artillery ‘B’ 53 (Sumith 24).

OMC 40 (Sundeep Reddy 10, Kathan 12) bt Sharp Shooters 20 (Aditya 12).

Krishna adjudged best

C. Krishna Sagar of the Sports Authority of India (STC, Saroornagar) was adjudged ‘best player’ in the South Zone inter-SAI kabaddi championship in Kerala in which the Hyderabad team finished with a silver medal.

By virtue of their performances in the above meet, three players — C. Krishna Sagar, A.Srinivas Reddy and K.Nuka Raju — were picked to represent South Zone in the all-India inter-SAI championship to be held in Sonepat (Haryana) from August 7, according to K.Prabhakar, Administrator of Saroornagar STC.

West Godavari wins

West Godavari defeated Vizianagaram 2-1 in the league match of the fourth Junior inter-district women’s hockey championship, sponsored by Srinivasa Educational Academy, at THE SV Arts College Grounds (Tirupati), according to information received here.

The results: West Godavari bt Vizianagaram 2-1; Anantapur bt Prakash 3-0; Krishna bt Nalgonda 3-2; Kurnool bt Hyderabad 2-0.

Easy for Gitanjali PS

Gitanjali Public School boys trounced St. Joseph’s, Marredpally 39-2 in Group D of the Dr. Emily Emanuel inter-school basketball tournament here on Wednesday.

Earlier, S. Vinay Kumar Yadav, international basketball player, inaugurated the championship in the presence of G.M. Sampath Kumar, Chairman, Technical Commission, Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and Renuka Masih, Vice-principal, St. Andrews.

Krishna athletics team

The Krishna district athletics men’s team will take part in the AP senior inter-district athletic championship. The meet will be held at the GMC Balayogi Stadium, Gachibowli, Hyderabad on July 28 and 29, according to Krishna District Athletic Association secretary A. Raghvendra Rao.

The team: P. Rajesh (400m, 800m, 4x100), M. Durga Rao (100m, 200m, 4x100), Y.S.M. Krishna (800m, 1500m, 4x100), Ch. Murali Krishna (long jump, triple jump), K. Vijay (javelin, long jump), B. Rajesh (discus, shot-put). Coa ch: Vamsi, SAAP coach.
Sports seminar

Dr. B. Uday Kumar, director, Indian Institute of Stress Management, will interact with college and school students on “Sports and Health” at Rotary Club on July 30 from 10 a.m. Along with students, physical directors, physical education teachers, members of district sports associations and clubs are invited to participate in the seminar.
