University to revive semester system

In deference to requests made by principals of affiliated colleges, says VC

14 weeks enough to cover portions
For first year programmes

TIRUCHI: Anna University here has decided to follow semester pattern for its first year programmes.

The semester pattern was done away with for the first year programmes two years ago when all engineering colleges in the State were affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, in view of the late start of the academic year.

But the newly-formed university here had decided to revive the semester system in deference to requests made by principals of affiliated colleges, the Vice-Chancellor, V. Ramachandran, said.

Principals had conveyed the difficulties first year students had been facing due to accumulation of portions. It is learnt that the Anna University, Coimbatore, will also follow suit.

“Fourteen weeks are enough to cover the first semester portions,” said Mr. Ramachandran.

The university is looking forward to starting the classes for first year students by August end and is likely to cut the vacation.

Meanwhile, classes for the 840 second, third and final year students commenced on Wednesday.

For the benefit of students, the university has displayed on the notice board timings of the 24 mofussil and town buses that ply along the Tiruchi-Pudukottai Highway.

The university had recently prevailed upon the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to include Anna University in the list of stops displayed on buses.

This would be of immense help to students pursuing part-time B.E. programmes that the university has introduced in four areas – Electronics and Communication Engineering; Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Computer Science Engineering; and Mechanical Engineering. Classes for these programmes will commence on August 6.

For the 240 vacancies in these programmes, 217 candidates have been admitted.

Supplementary counselling would be held on August 4 to fill the remaining seats, said Mr. Ramachandran.
