traffic blockers: Autorickshaws ‘encroaching’ upon the space near the bus stop in front of the Adyar depot.
CHENNAI: A change in the location of around 80 bus stops in the city with a view to ensuring easy flow of traffic is on the anvil. The traffic police and Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) have jointly identified the bus stops and the relocation may happen with the next few weeks, according to Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar. The driving factor behind the proposal is the traffic congestion near several bus stops. Often, this is the cause of a traffic jam during peak hours. Citing the example of the bus stop near the Central Leather Research Institute on Sardar Patel Road, Mr. Sunil Kumar said the vehicles following the buses come to a standstill near the halt. Adding to the confusion is the convergence when vehicles come down the flyover and from the service lane beneath. At times, it leads to a traffic build-up on the flyover as well. It is also not uncommon to find several vehicles piled up whenever buses halt at the stops, leading to time and fuel loss, other traffic police officers pointed out. An MTC official said the drivers have also been cautioned against stopping the buses before or after the designated stops.
