Meeting organised to elicit public opinion 74 per cent land already acquired
Kakinada: The establishment of SEZ will be a reality and will not be stopped even if resisted as the Central Government has already issued the gazette notification, clarified M.Subrahmanyam, East Godavari district Collector. Addressing a meeting organised at the Collectorate on Wednesday evening to elicit public opinion, which was attended by SEZ- displaced ryots, all-party leaders and representatives of non-governmental organisations, he said relief and rehabilitation package would be implemented and the ryots and people need not have any apprehensions. He said in the 12 SEZ-affected villages, there were 1496 families residing in 980 villages of whom as many as 1120 families that constituted 74 per cent, were landless. Under the relief package, he said, each family would be provided 150 sq mts land and a house would be constructed at a cost of Rs.1.10 lakhs. In addition, each family would be paid Rs.5,000 towards transportation charges for house shifting, Rs.66,000 towards other facilities besides providing one job to each family. He advised those opposing the SEZ to refrain from the policy of keeping the poor as poor forever, working for the interests of a few. Pointing out that already 74 per cent of land required for SEZ was already acquired, the Collector assured the displaced that they had to evacuate the villages only after total implementation of relief and rehabilitation package. While the decision on SEZ was taken in 2005, he said, land acquisition notification was issued during January and February 2006 and through negotiations land at Rs.3 lakhs per acre was purchased from the ryots. Jyothula Nehru, TDP district president, alleged that lands were being acquired in violation of rules and there was every danger of shelter belt getting destroyed due to SEZ. BJP leader Y Malakondaiah alleged that lands were being registered in the name of private individuals paving the way for real estate business. BSP State general secretary Ch Venugopal said it was not proper to acquire fertile lands without creating proper awareness among ryots. Representatives from NGOs including P Chiranjivini Kumary from Spandana, M Venkata Ramana from Samata, Pavan from Sadhikarata, Rajendra from Kadali network spoke seeking justice to the displaced in relief and rehabilitation and opposed forcible acquisition of lands. A few ryots said that they were opposed to SEZ as small ryots were the most affected. SEZ coordinator Murthy, Special Deputy Collector Prabhakara Pillai, DRO Mohanraju, Kakinada and Peddapuram RDOs K Nageswerarao and Prasad attended.
