Sapling planting drive

TAMBARAM: Pasumai Thayagam on Wednesday launched its scheme of planting 10 lakh saplings throughout the State.
Sowmya Anbumani, president of the non governmental organisation, inaugurated the scheme at the Government Higher Secondary School in Mannivakkam, about 10 kilometres from Tambaram. She said the scheme would be implemented in coordination with the United Nations. The habit of planting saplings should be inculcated in children at a young age, she said, adding that Pasumai Thayagam and the UN would hand over certificates to the schools that took up sapling plantation on a large scale.
One lakh on day one
On Wednesday, one lakh saplings were planted throughout the State, said N. Kannan, coordinator, Pasumai Thayagam, Kancheepuram district, where 30,000 saplings were planted.
