“Expedite Shencottah-Tenkasi gauge conversion work”
Staff Reporter
Extension of platform at Rajapalayam station sought
VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Rajapalayam Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Southern Railway General Manager to expedite gauge conversion work between Shencottah and Tenkasi.
In a statement, its secretary, S.N. Rama Raju, said that the conversion work for a seven-km stretch was yet to be completed though necessary fund was allocated two years back.
“This has delayed running of Pothigai Express from Tenkasi to Chennai on all the seven days a week,” he said.
Besides, he requested the General Manager to introduce new train services from Shencottah to Erode, Coimbatore, Thanjavur and Bangalore (all via Rajapalayam), which would add more revenue to the Railways.
The chamber also sought extension of the platform on both ends at Rajapalayam railway station since it was insufficient even for 18-coaches of Pothigai Express.
After addition of an air-conditioned coach, passengers find it difficult to get down from the coaches that are outside the platform.
The height of the platform should also be raised .
Mr. Raju appealed to the General Manager to run the Madurai-Tenkasi special trains on a permanent basis.
Second ticket counter or platform ticket vending machine, electronic coach position boards, earlier execution of foot over bridge were the other demands.
