Residents of 10 panchayats voice grievances to Tambaram MLA Delay in issue of ration cards and other documents highlighted
TAMBARAM: Erratic power supply, contaminated water, pathetic state of the roads and demand for land ownership were the problems residents of ten panchayats highlighted to Tambaram MLA S.R.Raja over the past three days. The MLA visited the ten village panchayats of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union as part of his grievance meeting tour that began on Tuesday. Beginning with village panchayats off East Coast Road, he met residents in Madipakkam and adjoining panchayats on Thursday. At Injambakkam, a large number of residents turned up and complained that acute power problems existed in the panchayat. Apart from frequent power disruptions, voltage fluctuations made life miserable for them, the residents informed Mr. Raja. Sub-station
He told residents that a piece of land in the panchayat was handed over to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, that would be constructing a 33/11 kilo volt sub-station in the panchayat. In the five village panchayats that he visited on Tuesday — Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam and Uthandi, all of which come under the St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union — poor response from the rural local bodies to tackle garbage collection and disposal, poor quality of roads, public toilets, school and government buildings and power supply problems were the most common grievances voiced by residents. Delay in issuing of ration cards and other documents, allotment for land for public purposes also figured in the grievances presented to Mr. Raja. For instances, residents of Bethel Nagar in Injambakkam complained that the government had stopped issuing house tax receipts to them. This, they said, would make them ineligible for the State government’s scheme of distributing pattas to poor families. Maternity hospital
Residents and office-bearers of civic groups in Madipakkam told the MLA that the area lacked government hospitals and they urgently required a maternity hospital. Residents of Madipakkam and Nanmangalam panchayats complained that roads in the rural local bodies were in a horrible condition and needed immediate attention. In Jalladampettai, residents complained of water contamination and certain confusions regarding the distribution of ration cards.
