Ten shops at Kangayam bus stand have no takers

Long wait: These shops are remaining unoccupied for the last three years. –

KANGAYAM: At the busy Kangayam bus stand, 10 shops stand out. The reason the shops are different is not that they sell wares that are unique but they are all shutters down.

Five shops facing the bus stand and an equal number on the rear are the same.

Shopkeepers whose shops are next to these shops say the shutters have remained in the same position for the past three years.

Constructed by the Tamilnadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, the shops were constructed to help people from the community rent them to make a living.

Sources say ever since the shops were let, the highest bidder from the community let it to people from other communities to carry out business from the premises. They say that so far only very few persons from the community had actually run the day-to-day business.

There is one more reason for the shops not having many takers. Soon after the shops were constructed, the corporation and the Kangayam Town Panchayat reached an agreement whereby the former would retain control over the shops with the rent shared equally.

Sources say things did not go the planned way and differences crept in between the two.

Now, it appears that the corporation had asked the Town Panchayat to pay Rs. 5 lakh to take complete control of the shops.

Sources in the Town Panchayat say the efforts are on to take control of the shops to give it a new lease of life.
