“Entrust custodianship of courier terminal to neutral body”

Association of Express Industry South India plea to AAI

CHENNAI: Members of the Association of Express Industry South India (AEISI) on Thursday appealed to the Airports Authority of India to entrust the courier terminal custodianship to a neutral body.

Calling for cancellation of the award of existing tender to a private operator, A. Sheriff, secretary, AEISI, told mediapersons that various factors such as extreme danger to database security, absolute lack of transparency in cost and operation, exorbitant pricing structure coupled with no value added services, forced the members to resort to such a decision.

Mr. Sheriff said following the exorbitant rates one of the operators had shutdown Chennai operations and four other large courier companies had cut down the business volume and are considering alternative means of consignment transfer.

A total of 15 major market players used the courier terminal, he said.

Exhorbitant rates

At present the custodian of the courier terminal had fixed the pricing structure for imports — facilitation and X-ray scanning. The custodian had fixed a sum of Rs. 200 per bag for facilitation and Rs. 6 a kg for scanning, besides a Service Tax of 12.36 per cent.

Charges in Delhi

Mr. Sheriff said in New Delhi the facilitation charge was only Rs 6.80 a kg with no minimum stipulation per bag and for X-ray scanning 50 paise a kg.

Due to the pricing pattern, an end-user in Chennai would clear a consignment of one kg at Rs. 337 while his counterpart in New Delhi would be paying just Rs. 8, K. Perem Kumar, treasurer AEISI, said.
