Orders on Telgi plea on August 2
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Orders on the plea of Abdul Karim Telgi, a key accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper case, that he be personally produced in the Special Court for CBI Cases, will be delivered on August 2.
Special Judge N. Velu, hearing the pleas of Mr. Telgi and two others, reserved orders on the petitions and said he would pass orders on August 2.
Opposing the ongoing trial through video-conferencing, the petitioners sought to be produced before the court so as to enable them to consult their advocates and avail themselves of all opportunities envisaged in law.
When the matter was taken up on Thursday, C.S.S. Pillai, counsel for Mr. Telgi, submitted that the latter’s legal right had been curtailed by the decision to hold trial through video-conferencing. Mr. Telgi’s right to consult his counsel had been undermined.
However, Jacob Daniel, Special Public Prosecutor, submitted that the petitioners had not opposed trial through video-conferencing in their petitions, and pointed out that the Supreme Court had upheld the legal validity of such trial. Mr. Telgi had been convicted in seven cases after trial through video-conferencing.
He was facing trial in 28 more cases, he said.
