Staff Reporter

He has been remanded to judicial custody till August 8

Coimbatore: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch CID on Thursday executed a pending warrant against S.K. Mohideen, one of the five ‘wanted’ accused in the Coimbatore serial blasts case.

He was produced before the Fifth Judicial Magistrate by a team led by Additional Superintendent of Police R. Sundarrajan. The court remanded him to judicial custody till August 8. He was taken to the Salem Central Prison.

S.K. Mohideen was declared as wanted accused by the prosecuting agency in its second charge sheet on May 5, 1999.

The others were, Kunju Mohammed, Nohu, Mujibur Rehman and Tailor Raja. The SIT and the Coimbatore City Police had arrested 168 in the case and 166 faced trial. One of the accused Riaz-Ur-Rehman turned approver while Mohammed Dasthagir died in custody.

S.K. Mohideen was wanted by the Tirunelveli police in connection with the murder of three persons on August 11, 1997, at Melappalayam and was arrested two years ago.

The trial in the Coimbatore serial blasts case commenced in 2001 and the prosecuting agency went ahead with the framing of charges against the 166 accused in custody treating Mohideen and four others as ‘wanted’ accused.

The Tirunelveli First Fast Track Court awarded triple life term for seven of the 16 accused in the murder case and acquitted Mohideen on Wednesday.

The SIT officials took him into custody.

He is facing charges of conspiracy and assembling of bombs at Vallal Nagar, Thippu Nagar and Bismi Nagar in Coimbatore and providing assistance to Al-Umma cadre in 1997/98.

Sources in the prosecuting agency said Mohideen would face a split trial.
