Red sanders seized at harbour, one held

CHENNAI: Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) here seized 10.204 tonnes of red sanders from an export container at the Chennai harbour on Wednesday and arrested one person.
A DRI release said the documents of the consignment from an export unit at Hosur mentioned 18 wooden crates containing 6,300 sq.ft of granite tiles to be exported to Singapore.
Goods replaced
Preliminary investigations revealed that the original goods were replaced with red sanders and the container was brought to the Chennai Port, DRI authorities said. The seized red sanders logs were valued at Rs. 31 lakh.
Red sanders grows in Cuddappah, Nellore, and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh and in some forest areas in Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu.
Musical instruments
The logs are used for making musical instruments and furniture, which are in great demand in China and Japan.
Export banned
Under the Foreign Trade policy, export of red sanders is prohibited and the timber species is also covered under Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna.
