CHENNAI: Work on the establishment of an additional unit of 500 megawatt (MW) at the North Chennai thermal power station is likely to begin by the end of this year.
Senior officials of the power station told visiting reporters on Thursday that bids would be received till the end of August. After scrutiny for three months, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board would begin the work before the year-end. Located at Ennore (25 km north of the city), the station has three units of 210 MW. One unit is under maintenance.
N. Sangameswaran, officiating Chief Engineer, and M. Natarajan, superintending engineer in charge of the project, said normally, a period of 48 months was prescribed for erecting a unit. But this time, the Board planned to complete the work in 36 months. Three more months would be taken for carrying out the trial run. The estimated cost of the unit was Rs. 2,176 crore.
The officials said the station was implementing eco-friendly measures for power production. While dry ash was being supplied to the construction industry, wet ash was transferred to a chain of ash ponds, maintained through water recycling. No effluent was let into the sea.
Since its establishment in 1995-96, the station recorded the highest plant load factor (an index of efficiency) in 2006-2007. Last year, the plant load factor was 88.87 per cent.
