Carnatic musician S.V. Parthasarathy dead

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The world of Carnatic music lost yet another veteran in the passing away of renowned musician and musicologist S.V.Parthasarathy here on Wednesday. He was 90.

Parthasarathy, fondly known as SVP, was born in 1917 to famous writer S.V.Vijayaraghavachariar and Pankajammal. Having been brought up in a family steeped in classical music, it was but natural for him to pursue the art form. He had his initial training under his mother.

After schooling, he joined the Music College of Annamalai University in 1934. The nearly four years that he spent there helped him learn and master the finer aspects of Carnatic music under the tutelage of stalwarts such as T.S.Sabesa Iyer, K.Ponniah Pillai, Tiger Varadachariar and Sathoor Krishna Iyengar. In 1938, he secured a first class and received the ‘Sangeeth Bhushanam’ title from the university.

From 1939, he gave several concerts across the country. He was also a proficient veena player.

On an assignment from Ananda Vikatan, SVP travelled with legendary musician Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and notated songs in a manner that typically represented the much-hailed Ariyakudi bani (style).

The experience helped him imbibe the style of presentation that Ariyakudi was famous for. This also helped him during his career at the All India Radio, Tiruchi, to run a feature detailing various aspects of raga and sahithya (lyrics).

Audio recordings

His audio recordings featuring pieces such as ‘Mundu Venuga…’ in raga Durbar, ‘Unnai allaal…’ in Simhendramadyamam and ‘Mathim Dehi…’ in Kalyani were very popular. Even today, every time a musician performs any of these, rasikas fondly recall SVP’s soulful rendition.

He received several honours and titles including the ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar Award’ in 2005, ‘Sangeetha Samrat’ title in 1977, the ‘Nadakkanal’ title, the ‘Senior Musician Award’ from Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha and the ‘Senior Musician Award’ from the Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer Trust. He also trained students in vocal music and veena.
