Vision document being readied for textile sector
Staff Reporter
COIMBATORE: The State Government plans to release a vision document for the textile sector by the end of this financial year.
It will be on the lines of the one released by the Centre. “We are identifying the problem areas and preparing a document,” according to Commissioner for Handlooms and Textiles M.R. Mohan.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he said: “Tamil Nadu is a pioneer in the textile industry, and we will continue to support the growth of the sector.” The document would cover various issues and focus on the entire industry.
The cooperative sector was supporting mainly weavers. About 1,200 handloom cooperative societies were supporting two lakh weavers. Of these societies, 900 were making profit. Efforts were on to enable the others to make profit. Design intervention and value addition had helped the weavers. So far, 1,000 new designs had been released in association with the National Institute of Design. Another 500 would be released before Deepavali.
