On alert: Army jawans and policemen keeping vigil near the site of a fidayeen attack at Zakura in Srinagar on Thursday that left two militants dead and seven security men injured.
Srinagar: The CRPF on Thursday foiled an attempt by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants to storm its battalion headquarters near a research centre of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre here by killing two militants. Two heavily-armed militants tried to enter the headquarters of 42 Battalion at Zakura but were killed in the encounter, CRPF Inspector-General S.K. Singh told PTI. Seven CRPF men were injured in the attack carried out from the rear side of the camp, he said. The militants came close to the boundary wall of the camp, hurled grenades and fired at the pickets. They were killed in the retaliatory firing. Later, a caller identifying himself as LeT spokesman Abdullah Gaznavi told the local media that the attack was mounted to denounce claims by authorities that peace had returned to the Valley. — PTI BARC facility safe
T.S. Subramanian reports from Chennai: The BARC facility did not suffer any damage in the attack, according to a spokesman of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). All BARC personnel working there are safe. Asked what work the BARC facility did, S.K. Malhotra, head, Environment and Public Awareness Division, DAE, said it used cobalt-60 as a source for irradiating food items, especially fruits, to preserve them for a longer period. The irradiation facility was originally a big one. However, after militancy took root in Jammu and Kashmir, the BARC scaled it down and relocated some units and staff in the BARC at Trombay, Mumbai. The vacant space and buildings were given to the CRPF.
