Addressing workers’ issues: CITU secretary Kanai Banerjee speaking at the State conference of the Railway Contract Workers’ Union in Kannur on Thursday.
KANNUR: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) secretary Kanai Banerjee has said that the union will initiate efforts to organise Railway contract catering workers in association with other trade unions in the Railway sector. Inaugurating the State conference of the Railway Contract Workers’ Union, affiliated to the CITU, here on Thursday, Mr. Banerjee said the catering workers’ union would observe a ‘demand week’ to highlight the demands of the catering staff working in railway stations and pantry cars. If the authorities failed to concede to the demands, the union would resort to massive agitation, he added. Mr. Banerjee said the CITU would join hands with other trade unions to fight exploitative system in Railways. The CITU was trying to organise unorganised workers in the sector where disparity in wages was glaring, he said. The catering service was conducted by Railways till 1977, he said adding that no other trade union had come out against the exploitation in the sector. Vested interests
Monopoly vested interests were trying to control the catering service in Railways, Mr. Banerjee said. Catering workers’ union State president R.G. Pillai presided over the function. Union general secretary P.K. Achuthan and CITU leader K.P. Sahadevan spoke at the function.
