‘Charge only half fare for children in buses’

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has drawn the attention of the Transport Department towards the non-compliance to the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Motor vehicle Rules by bus conductors in respect of half fare for children in the age group of three to 12.

In a memorandum to the Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Circle, T. Gunasekaran, the forum secretary, K. Kathirmathiyon, said that many of the conductors were not aware of Rule 230 of Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rule 1989, regarding the age limit for half fare for children in moffussil buses (other than city and town service).

Lot of complaints were made in this regard in 2005 and action was taken against many conductors. Some of them admitted that they were collecting full fare for children above 5 years.

Many conductors were not aware of the Rule Hence, Transport Department instructed the State Transport Corporations as well as private bus owners to exhibit the following information prominently inside the buses:‘Half ticket would be issued for children of age between 3 and 12’.

This would help conductors know the Rule andpassengers to insist on half fare.

Further the Regional Transport Officers were instructed that thereafter Fitness Certificate should be renewed only if the information board on half fare was provided inside the buses.

Even after two years of wait, unfortunately only few buses have this information board.

The non-compliance by bus operators and the State Transport Corporations only indicated that the RTOs and Motor Vehicle Inspectors renewed the Fitness Certificates without the information board, which is a clear violation of the instruction issued.

The forum has demanded action against officials who had violated the instructions at the time of renewing the Fitness Certificates.
