Municipal workers block highway

KOLAR: Even as the indefinite Statewide strike by municipal workers entered the 11th day on Thursday, hundreds of pourakarmikas from all over the district resorted to road blockade here.

Traffic hit

The workers, who came in a procession, squatted on National Highway 4, near APMC circle on the outskirts of the city. Vehicular movement was affected due to the agitation.

Addressing the protesters, CITU district president G. Narayanaswamy supported the demands of the municipal workers.

He condemned the Government’s approach towards the agitation by the pourakarmikas. Karnataka Rajya Pouraseva Noukarara Sangha taluk president Venkatesh also spoke.

Procession

Earlier, the agitating workers, including large number of women, took out a procession in the city.

Workers from Srinivaspur, Gowribidanur, Malur and other taluks, besides Kolar took part in the agitation.

Minister gheraoed

Meanwhile, Congress activists gheraoed Municipal Administration Minister R. Srinivas at Doddur in Bangarpet taluk while he was on his way to attend a programme on Wednesday.

The protesters urged him to take steps to end the strike by municipal workers.
