Chennai: The element of competition is considerably enhanced with the decision of Pakistan to take part in the seventh Asia Cup hockey championship to be held here from September 1 to 9 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium. Earlier, Pakistan wanted to skip the event citing other commitments much to the chagrin of its supporters on this side of the border. The turnaround by Pakistan has compelled a re-draw of the pools announced earlier. K. Jothikumaran, Secretary, Indian Hockey Federation released the new groupings at a media briefing on Thursday at the MR Stadium. Mr. Jothikumaran acknowledged that the presence of Pakistan would definitely enhance the profile of the competition and ensure an adequate public response. Mr. Jothikumaran added that the pools were re-arranged taking into consideration the present world ranking of teams. He reiterated the fact that this edition of the Asia Cup would be taken up for world rating by FIH. The logo of the Asia Cup was also released. The pools: A: Pakistan, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong (China) and Singapore; B: Korea, India, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Thailand. — Hockey Correspondent
