‘Agriculture needs heavy investment’
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Agriculture needs heavy capital investment as it will play a crucial role in meeting the fuel needs of the country in the next 15-20 years, Cooperation Secretary S. Machendranathan has said.
With more demand for bio-diesel in the years to come, the demand for grains will increase, he said, participating in the silver jubilee celebrations of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development here on Wednesday.
Mr. Machendranathan said though the short-term credit needs of farmers were being met by cooperative banks and nationalised banks, the disbursement of long-term credits for the infrastructure development of agriculture was poor.
Unless farm infrastructure was improved, it would be difficult to increase productivity.
