In what turned out to be the shortest game of the day, Hari settled for a 19-move peace treaty and raised his tally to four points. Tiviakov, one of the four overnight leaders, surged ahead of the pack after beating local hope Mark Bluvshtein.

At Balaguer, Spain, it was raining norms for the Indians in the Balaguer Open chess tournament that concluded on Wednesday.

National junior champion Abhijeet Gupta showed the way by reinforcing his claim on the final Grandmaster norm with an 11-move draw with Georgian GM Levan Aroshidze. Abhijeet’s tally of 7.5 points from 10 rounds also earned him the fourth place in the event.

The Bhilwara-lad, whose earlier norms came in the Andorra Open in Spain last year and in the Parsvnath International Open here in January this year, now needs to raise his rating from 2472 to 2500 for the title of GM.

Though official confirmation is awaited regarding Arun Karthik’s GM norm performance, and IM norm performances of National junior girls’ champion Soumya Swaminathan and Aswin Jayaram, Abhishek Das (IM) and Padmini Rout (WIM) emerged as the other norm makers.
