Washermen back to work as water level recedes in Cauvery
R. Sundaram
Medical team, police and revenue officials are camping in flood-affected areas
ERODE: Washermen who were idle for the last few days due to heavy flood in River Cauvery, were back to work from Wednesday.
The Cauvery river was in spate due to heavy discharge of water from the Mettur Stanley Reservoir. The excess water from the Lower Bhavani Project Reservoir, Bhavanisagar, discharged into the Bhavani river, which merges with the Cauvery at Bhavani, also created flood.
The flood water entered into many huts and houses in Karungalpalayam, Vairapalayam and Krishnampalayam. The residents were removed into safer places and provided with free food and shelter. A medical team was posted in the areas.
The washermen, who depend on the Cauvery for their livelihood said at present the water flow is normal. Medical team, police and revenue officials are still camping in the flood-affected areas watching the situation.
