‘End row on Basaveshwara’s caste’

Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR: The Bijapur Zilla Raitha Shakti Kendra has urged the Government to initiate action to put a permanent end to controversies with regard to caste background of the 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara.

In a statement here on Wednesday, association president Venkatesh Kolkar raised objection to the questionable mentions about Basaveshwara’s caste background in “Kurubara Hejjegalu” by Chandrakant Bijjaragi of Bijapur and in “Anudeva Horaganavanu” by Banjegere Jayaprakash.

He said Basaveshwara preached universal brotherhood and spearheaded a sustained campaign in an effort to create a casteless society.

However, what was regrettable was that some writers had been trying to limit such a person in a narrow framework of caste through their work in the name of research and freedom of expression, he said.

It was not understandable what these people were trying to prove, he added.
