This Day That Age
The Federal Party of Ceylon has announced its decision to call off the civil disobedience movement proposed to be launched in August in support of its demand for language rights of the Tamil minority of the island. The announcement came in a joint statement by the leaders of the Federal Party and the Prime Minister, Mr. Solomon Bandaranaike, after a six-hour meeting on July 25. The joint statement was the climax of talks between the Prime Minister and the Federal Party leaders spread over three weeks. The discussions were initiated following the threat of civil disobedience movement by the Federal Party and the growing tension between the Tamil and Sinhalese communities resulting from the passage of the Act which made Sinhalese the sole State language.
