This Day That Age
The Tunisian Constituent Assembly on July 25 voted unanimously to abolish the 250-year-old monarchy. The Assembly later proclaimed Tunisia a Republic. Mr. Habib Bourguiba, the Prime Minister, was declared the first President of the new Republic. The vote ends the 14-year-old rule of the Bey, Sidi Lamine, who is 75 and 29th Bey of the dynasty. Before the vote, Mr. Bourguiba declared: “No action dictated by a spirit of vengeance will be taken against the Bey or against his family.” The Assembly, which met in extraordinary session to take its historic decision while the Bey remained in his Carthage Palace, strongly guarded by troops and police, elected Mr. Bourguiba unanimously.
