FOR DEVELOPMENT: Members of the Gulbarga Central University Establishment Action Committee staging a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Gulbarga on Thursday.
GULBARGA: The demand for the establishment of a Central university in Gulbarga gained momentum with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HKCCI) expressing support to it and joining forces with the Gulbarga Central University Establishment Action Committee (GCUEAC) to take out a procession here on Thursday. State Secretariat member of the CPI(M) Maruti Manpade and president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Umakant Nigudgi, office-bearers of the GCUEAC, including its president Pratap Singh Tiwari, conveners B.S. Maheshwarappa, M.B. Sajjan, and also those of the Gulbarga University Private Colleges Teachers Association participated in the procession from the Jagat Circle to the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They submitted a memorandum, addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to the district authorities. Postgraduate students, research scholars, teachers, lecturers, readers, professors and heads of different departments in Gulbarga University also participated in the procession. The processionists, carrying placards demanding the establishment of the university, shouted slogans demanding that the Prime Minister take initiative to sanction the university to Gulbarga. They wanted the Chief Minister send a proposal in this regard to the Union Government. The memorandum, while appreciating the announcement of the Prime Minister that 30 Central universities would be established in the country with at least one in each State, said that this decision would be a landmark one as it would help all regions to get access to higher education. Access to quality higher education is not spread evenly in the State resulting in regional imbalances, the memorandum said and added that the Hyderabad Karnataka region comprising five districts has been identified as the most backward with respect to social, economic and educational development. The memorandum made out a strong case for upgrading the existing Gulbarga University as a Central university and said that the university established 27 years ago is catering to the educational needs of the region by imparting postgraduate education and research in 38 disciplines.
