News Analysis
A report “Cabinet panels approve text of nuclear deal” (July 26, 2007, page 1) stated that Mr. Pranab Mukherjee is the Defence Minister. A number of readers point out that Mr. Pranab Mukherjee is the Minister of External Affairs. Mr. A.K. Antony is the Minister of Defence. (On December 13, 2006, and February 7, 2007, we had issued a similar correction pointing out their portfolios.) A report “French intelligence penetrated PMO in 1980s: Ex-RAW official” (July 26, 2007) gave the contraction of the intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing as R&AW, leading to a few queries. In his book, the ex-RAW official has given it as R&AW. The official contraction is RAW. It is Justice Mr. Singh. A report “[Division] Bench [of the Punjab and Haryana High Court] stays order, lawyer freed” (July 25, 2007) gave it incorrectly, in three instances, as Mr. Justice Singh. An article “Ramchand Pakistani, a film with a difference” (“Newscape” page, July 22, 2007) incorrectly stated that Mr. Javed Jabbar had served as a minister and was a thrice-elected senator in Pakistan. Mr. Jabbar clarifies that he served as a minister in three federal cabinets of Pakistan (1988-90, 1996-97, 1999-2000) and was elected for one six-year term as senator (1985-91). The first paragraph in a report “Pension ordered to temporary staff” (Tamil Nadu, July 26, 2007) was: “The Madras High has ordered payment of pension to two temporary employees, who had put in more than 30 years of service and retired over 10 years ago.” It should have been the Madras High Court. In a report “Sri Lanka thrashes Bangladesh” (“Sport”, July 24, 2007), on the second ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, it was stated that Sanath Jayasuriya fell to Syed Rasel, while the scoreboard credited Abdur Razzak with his wicket. The scoreboard was right. A sentence in a report “India flies to the top league in aviation” (“Business Review” page, July 23, 2007) was “Air India rewrote history by ordering the largest number of aircraft ever for Boeing — 68 new planes at an estimated cost of $11.6 billion.” A reader disputed this, citing larger orders by airlines in the West. The clarification from the Boeing Company is that the Boeing-Air India order agreement for 68 Boeing commercial jets was the single largest commercial aeroplane order in India’s civil aviation history, with a value of more than $11 billion at list prices. It was also the biggest single order for aircraft for Boeing in 2006 from India. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
