Man from Bangalore arrested
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: A resident of Bangalore who runs a coaching centre was arrested by the Kolkata police from that city on Wednesday, bringing to eight the number of those so far held in connection with an inter-State racket that engages people to impersonate for candidates appearing for the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination.
The impersonators, usually academically well qualified, appear for the examination, mainly for admission to medical colleges, on behalf of examinees who pay the racket- eers exorbitant fees for the services rendered. The racket has links in different States. Recently, a woman was arrested from Benares in Uttar Pradesh in this connection.
The person arrested in Bangalore, Sahid Abrar, used to operate as a middle-man in the racket. He had come to Kolkata prior to the JEE examination this year and stayed in the city for some time, arranging for dummy candidates for the examination as well as frequently supplying examinees willing to pay the required fees to get through the admission test without appearing for it, a senior police official said here on Thursday.
