Sex determination: Strict action mooted

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has suggested stringent monitoring and punishment for those carrying out sex determination tests and indulging in selective abortions.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, the NCW chairperson Girija Vyas cited the recent incident at Pataudi village in Haryana where a private clinic was found carrying out sex determination and illegal abortions. Surveys and raids should be conducted in the area to identify such illegal clinics. The National Inspection and Monitoring Committee of the Pre-Natal Determination Test should visit the spot. “To ensure that the culprit gets exemplary punishment, equal emphasis should given on violation of the PNDT Act.”

The NCW had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and sent a three-member team to inquire.
