Nepal faces food insecurity: U.N.

Ameet Dhakal

KATHMANDU: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have said a significant number of people in Nepal are at risk of food insecurity due to a series of disasters in 2006 and 2007.

In a statement here, the U.N. agencies said 42 of the 75 districts of the country are food deficient.

A combination of prolonged drought, hailstorms, and flooding in areas traditionally most agriculturally productive have resulted in an estimated 2.25 lakh-tonne foodgrains shortage for 2006/2007, compared to a food deficit of only 23,000 tonnes last year, the statement said.

The report is based on the findings of a joint FAO/WFP crop and food supply assessment mission conducted in March and April.
