MADURAI: The Regional Passport Office (RPO) coming up in Madurai will be one among the best in terms of technology and infrastructure. For the first time, a fully air-conditioned ambience is being created with sophisticated systems, new version software and processing mechanism. “This will be the most advanced passport office in the country. Right from day one, passports will be issued in 30 days as per norms. Online activities such as the Passport Information Services on Net will be introduced,” the Tiruchi Passport Officer, S. Balachandran, told The Hindu here on Thursday. With a jurisdiction of at least eight districts, the RPO is expected to handle 50 per cent of the applications processed in Tiruchi now. Being developed in the erstwhile Ramanathapuram Collector’s Bungalow, it will comprise an air-conditioned waiting hall and a child care centre. It is likely to start operations from the third week of September. The Madurai Collector, S.S. Jawahar, said the ‘Passport Adalat’ service was launched to redress the grievances of applicants online. Petitioners should send a mail to Collector – collrmdu@tn.nic.in – explaining their difficulty. On a fixed date, the Collectorate will get in touch with the Tiruchi RPO through video-conferencing and sort out the problem.
